The flower of Patience or Mauna Kea silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp.) What makes the blooming of a silversword even more special is that the plants live from 15 to more than 50 years but bloom only once and die.
It is a federally listed endangered species endemic to the island of Hawaii (Big Island). It is the “crown jewel” of the volcanic mountain Mauna Kea, at elevations above 2,600 m (8,500 ft).
